Written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Sarah Ruhl, In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play) is a funny, provocative, and deeply insightful exploration of female desire, bodily autonomy, and the social constraints placed on women in Victorian America. By turns laugh-out-loud hilarious and surprisingly tender, it asks who gets to define our experiences, and what becomes possible when we begin defining them for ourselves. What unfolds is a remarkable true story of grief, generosity, resilience, and human connection. As people from different countries, cultures, and walks of life find themselves thrown together, they discover that compassion can transcend even the deepest divides. At its heart, this is a story about what becomes possible when we choose to see one another not as strangers, but as members of a shared human family.
