Documentary Theatre is a diverse, fascinating landscape. Sometimes known as Verbatim Theatre, playwrights in this field derive their text from interviews, court transcripts, and any other primary documents. This course will focus on the ethics and strategies of representing a "real" story on stage.

Students will read three full plays, including "The Laramie Project" and "Twilight: Los Angeles 1992," as well as scholarly articles on the medium. Throughout the five-session course, each student will also workshop and execute ideas for an original five-minute verbatim piece. While this exercise is small, the course will prepare students to undertake larger pieces on their own.
