CHARACTERS

HEDWIG: East German rock singer and front person of The Angry Inch; formerly Hansel, who grew up in communist East Berlin, fell in love with an American GI; became Hedwig and underwent a botched sex change operation in order to marry and move to the states; glamorous, charismatic and always commanding even when they are at their most bitchy or vulnerable; has had high highs and low lows; very strong rock voice (high to B4); must have a convincing East German accent; performer must be able to dexterously shift from persona to persona (Hedwig’s mother, husband, rock icon ex-lover, Tommy Gnosis); performer should have terrific physical stamina and improv abilities, including a willingness to interact with the audience. All gender identities and ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Ages 18 and up

YITZHAK: Hedwig’s Croatian partner and roadie/back-up singer; they are Hedwig’s vocal sparring partner; theirs is an emotional and at times abusive relationship; the performer playing Yitzhak should be believable as a butch being, but one that chafes at the bonds of traditional masculinity and longs to explore their feminine, creative side; very strong singer with rock and roll vibe; wide vocal range a must (High belt to a G); must have a convincing Balkan accent. Traditionally Yitzhak is played by a female-identifying person in drag, but all gender identities and ethnicities are encouraged to apply. Ages 18 and up

SYNOPSIS

Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the story of “internationally ignored song stylist” Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock ‘n’ roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, and is left with just “an angry inch.” This outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious story is dazzlingly performed by Hedwig in the form of a rock gig/stand-up comedy routine backed by Yitzhak and the hard-rock band “The Angry Inch.” It’s a rocking ride, funny, touching, and ultimately inspiring to anyone who has felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc./ Broadway Licensing
