Combining solo theatre and archival film, Within the Silence brings life to history through the eyes of a teenage girl of Japanese descent. Understand the impact of Executive Order 9066, which imprisoned thousands of innocent Japanese Americans during World War II. Emiko is an ordinary American teenager whose life is changed forever after Japan bombs Pearl Harbor. Emiko and every member of her family is forced to find a way to prove their loyalty to a country that sees them as “the face of the enemy.

Rachel Rene, Seattle: Rachel Rene is a Seattle-raised actor, director, and stage manager who began her theater journey over 30 years ago. Performing Living Voices’ Within the Silence and Native Vision are her favorite projects to date. Other recent acting performances include: touring shows with Theater for Young Children and Intergenerational Theatre Company, South Pacific and 9 to 5 at Seattle Musical Theatre, and A Tale for the Time Being at Book-It Theatre. Recent directing credits include: Burien Actors Theatre’s Ben Butler and several staged readings of new plays with Seattle Playwrights Salon. Rachel Rene has a BA in theatre arts from Western Washington University.
