Hailed as one of Broadway’s most original musicals and the winner of 5 Tony Awards, Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, funny, and intimate musical about seeing one’s parents through grown-up eyes.
Book & Lyrics by Lisa Kron
Music by Jeanine Tesori
Based on the best-selling graphic novel by Alison Bechdel
Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French
Directed by Kate Carruthers
Kate received her B.A. in Theatre from Washington State University and first set foot on BPA’s stage almost 35 years ago. Kate cherishes the many roles she has played at BPA since then, from backstage crew to actor, member of the board (co-chairing the initial Capital Campaign to build BPA’s playhouse), and Director.
Onstage, Kate has played roles in Grease, Marvin’s Room, Blithe Spirit, The Butler Did It, and You Can’t Take it With You.
Her directing credits at BPA have ranged from the classical (Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing) to comedic (Art; Picasso at the Lapin Agile), dramatic (The Kentucky Cycle, Snow Falling on Cedars, The Grapes of Wrath, Amadeus, Arcadia), and – more recently – to contemporary “dramedies” (The Revolutionists, August: Osage County). Kate’s plays often take deep dives into the human condition, examining history, culture and the importance of family. Several have contemplated art and the nature of artistic genius, as well as quantum physics, and even time travel.
Kate is excited to expand her directing repertoire this season with Fun Home, her first full musical. A bittersweet personal story of one woman’s fraught relationship with her father, it also tackles universal themes in its exploration of family, loss, and discovery of self. It is by turns insanely funny, sad, and profound. Just Kate’s kind of show!
Choreography by Joanna Hardie
Joanna is always excited to return to BPA, where she has had the great pleasure of directing the hit runs of Xanadu, A Christmas Story, The Little Mermaid, and The Drowsy Chaperone. Her choreography has also been seen at BPA in Little Shop of Horrors, Shrek, The Full Monty, Chicago, The Rocky Horror Show, and A Chorus Line. Joanna’s work has also been seen at ReAct Theatre, Seattle Musical Theatre, Café Nordo, and Second Story Repertory. During the day, Joanna is the Data Operations Manager at the Seattle Rep. She would like to thank the whole BPA family for making this theatre such a magical place to make art.
