Bainbridge Performing Arts is delighted to host Bainbridge Dance Center’s 37th Annual Student Performance showcase on June 28 – 30. Featured in four performances, dancers age four to eighteen will perform short works choreographed by the BDC faculty that demonstrate student artistry and technical skill in ballet, modern, jazz, and tap techniques. A celebrated island tradition since 1981, BDC’s annual performances showcase how young dancers develop over the course of their training. BDC invites the community to join them for this celebration of the craft and artistry of dance.
Each performance will feature a new ballet commissioned by NYC based choreographer Christopher Williams for the BDC Advanced Repertory Ballet Program: an original production of Les Sylphides. First choreographed in 1909 by Michel Fokine for the Ballet Russes with music by Frederic Chopin, Les Sylphides is a romantic reverie of sylphs dancing in the moonlight with a young poet. This ballet is in the repertory of nearly every ballet company in the world. BDC is honored to present Christopher’s unique and magical reimagining of this seminal work.
Christopher Williams, dubbed “one of the most exciting choreographic voices out there” (NY Times) and “the downtown prodigy” (The New Yorker), is a choreographer, dancer, and puppeteer who has made over thirty original and collaborative movement-based works since 1999. His work has been presented in the US, France, England, Italy, Spain, Holland, Colombia, and Russia. Visit him online at www.christopherwilliamsdance.org.
Founded in 1981, Bainbridge Dance Center is dedicated to providing high-quality dance education focused on cultivating curiosity, generosity, and professionalism. BDC offers classes in creative movement, ballet, modern, jazz, tap, pilates, and dance composition for children and adults. Visit online at www.bainbridgedancecenter.com.
