HÄNSEL AND GRETEL - A Holiday Show for the Whole Family - December 7 - 23
Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA) presents HÄNSEL AND GRETEL
A Holiday Show for the Whole Family
December 7 – 23: Fridays @ 7:30 p.m. + Saturdays & Sundays @ 3:00 p.m.
Bainbridge Performing Arts is pleased to present HÄNSEL AND GRETEL, an opera by Engelbert Humperdinck, in this special collaboration with Bainbridge Dance Center. BPA’s production is directed and translated by Lisa Mandelkorn and presented with conductor Kim Allen Kluge and musical direction by Victoria Whitlow. It’s “Kid-tastic!” - a holiday show for the WHOLE family.
Mandelkorn’s brilliant new English translation of Engelbert Humperdinck’s wildly popular fairy tale opera is based on the classic Brothers Grimm folk tale. It’s a wickedly funny and magical holiday feast of dancing, beautiful music, delicious sets, and charming costumes that families will “eat up” with relish. In Mandelkorn’s distinctive version Hänsel is a woods-savvy Boy Scout sort, and Gretel, who is perpetually practicing her ballet moves, leads the neighborhood children in a Macarena-style dance to open the show.
Having performed the role of Gretel numerous times under the batons of Kim Allen Kluge and Anton Coppola, Mandelkorn is pleased to make her directorial debut here with BPA’s first HÄNSEL AND GRETEL. She comes to Bainbridge Island from a professional opera career in New York City and is thrilled with the range of talent she’s encountered locally. The cast of all ages includes Shannon Dowling, Lisa Mandelkorn, Jacqueline Quirk, Daniel Oakden, Marie Sinclair-Bennett, Evelina Svensson, Jennifer Jett, Christina Rawlings, Julia Wiggins, Nora Lang, Bronte Walker, Ali Lorenz, Madeline Mikami, Olivia Sander, Chloe Lesh, Mynah Queva, Ann Holsapple, Angelina Kollodge, Renee Messinger, Cordelia Janow, Lucian Caro, Chloe Bohonos, YuYu Madigan, Anna Banyas, Sophia Eldridge, Ben Eldridge, Libby Clements, Alexa Bennett, Zach Norberg, Evelyn Cantwell, Mia Alpaugh, Grace Anne Smith, Freeman Tuohy, Gracie Cate Moffat, Kalea Levy, Isabel Faget, Ben Eager, Jill Colley, Barbi Jo Smith, and Katey Hamlin.
The magical festivity and generous spirit of the season take center stage with this production, which will include display of a giant gingerbread house in the BPA lobby. We’re also delighted to partner with Helpline House and PAWS, and the gingerbread house will serve as a central drop-off location for non-perishable donations to both organizations throughout the holiday season.
