"The Big Fish"Join us in the BPA Gallery May 5 for an artist reception and a fanciful evening of art, food, and friends. When Neil Johannsen began to translate the novel The Big Fish into colorful, whimsical pieces of art, he realized that the story is about the journey of life – one that could have been borrowed from the epic poem The Odyssey, or maybe from James Joyce’s Ulysses. Challenging himself to interpret the story’s tall tales into painted pictures of the truth, Johannsen relied on the larger-than-life lessons of fish (and fishing): “Just how big WAS that fish?” “How does an artist out-fox a fish with paint and brushes?” “How can a painter stretch the truth on canvas?” In the end, Johannsen discovered that all an artist need do is seek meaning in the natural beauty around us to translate the treasure of life on this wonderful blue planet. Half of all profits from sales will be donated to Bainbridge Performing Arts. Johannsen’s work may be viewed online at www.neiljohannsenart.com.
