BPA Winter Auditions for “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” & “Distracted”

December 10 & 11: Monday & Tuesday @ 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Bainbridge Performing Arts is pleased to hold winter auditions December 10 and 11 for two exciting productions, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” and "Distracted."

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” includes roles for five men and four women, ages 16 and up. Strong vocal and improv skills are a plus. Rehearsals extend December 2012 - January 2013; Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (evenings) plus Saturday (days). Run dates are February 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17 (plus a Pay-What-You-Can Preview February 7). Those auditioning are required to prepare a 1-2-minute Broadway style song and a 1-2-minute comedic monologue. An accompanist will be provided, but participants must bring sheet music. Participants are welcome to sing a cappella and are urged to bring a headshot or a current picture to the audition.

In “…Spelling Bee,” six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. Music and lyrics are by William Finn, with book by Rachel Sheinkin. BPA’s production is directed by Ken Michels, with musical direction by Josh Anderson.

“Distracted” offers roles for three men, five women, and one nine-year-old boy. Rehearsals extend January - March 2013; Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (evenings) plus Saturday or Sunday (days). Run dates are March 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24 (plus a Pay-What-You-Can Preview March 7). Those auditioning are required to prepare a 1-2-minute monologue and are asked to bring a headshot or a current picture to the audition.

What’s wrong with nine-year-old Jesse? He can’t sit still, he curses, he raps, and you can’t get him into - or out of - his pajamas. His teacher thinks it’s ADD. His dad says he’s just a boy. Mama’s on a quest for answers. Lisa Loomer’s witty and thoughtful comic drama (or dramatic comedy) asks all of us, “Are we so tuned into our 24/7 info-rich world that we’ve tuned out what really matters?” BPA’s production is directed by Kate Carruthers.

Auditions for both productions are Monday and Tuesday, December 10 and 11, from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. by appointment only. Interested parties are requested to email Deirdre Hadlock (dhadlock@bainbridgeperformingarts.org) to schedule an appointment.
