Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra presents Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony

November 10 & 11: Saturday @ 7:30 p.m. & Sunday @ 3:00 p.m.

At Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA)

Maestro Wesley Schulz launches the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra’s 40th Anniversary Season with “Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony,” featuring works by Copland, Tchaikovsky, and Berlioz, with Sarah Mattox, mezzo soprano.

One of Tchaikovsky’s most endearing gifts was his penchant for melody. His Fifth Symphony is a virtual bounty of intoxicating themes including the second movement’s famous melody for French Horn. Berlioz’s six songs for mezzo soprano, Les nuits d’ete (Summer Nights), radiate tenderness, sensuality, and like Tchaikovsky, gives voice to inspired melodies. Aaron Copland’s Outdoor Overture opens the program with spirited brass playing an invigorating rhythm. This work provides the perfect opening to our 40th Anniversary in which we celebrate the orchestra’s vitality and contribution to the arts on Bainbridge Island.

Conductor Wesley Schulz has been lauded by musicians for his “intensity and emotion” in performances and for his “approachable and inspiring” leadership. Whether in regards to new music, opera, or ballet, Schulz’s “passion for music…is contagious.” Sarah Mattox is a founding member and composer for TangleTown Trio, a group specializing in accessible new music in a chamber setting, as well as classical crossover music. The group’s first album, Song Nouveau, has been broadcast internationally to critical acclaim, and is lauded for its “…original music, captivating stories, and virtuosic performances.”
