Exhibit continues through June at Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA)

Opening June 5 for a full month in the BPA Gallery, “Grey Matters: All Things Elephant” features drawings, mixed media, and prints by John Kenyon Ellis, with words on elephant wisdom collected and written by Ann Wilkinson Ellis. Drop by the BPA Gallery June 5 for the First Friday Art Walk – a special artist reception and a fun evening of art, food, and friends.

The crisis in poaching elephants in Africa for their tusks continues at a frightening pace. At the current rate of destruction, elephants could become extinct in Africa within six years. Ellis says, “We were moved by this crisis to focus on creating art work with the images of these magnificent animals…first in drawings, and then – under the instruction of Wendy Orville – in monotype prints.” These original prints and drawings will be for sale along with signed archival prints.

Some of the images were inspired by Jamie Bechtel’s wonderful photography taken at the orphanage itself. These photos will also be for sale during the exhibit. Proceeds from all sales will benefit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an elephant and rhino orphanage in Kenya.

On the front line of this crisis, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage takes in the young after their parents are slaughtered. Sadly, the orphanage faces overwhelming demands and needs our financial assistance to take in more of the orphaned young. For more information about the trust, visit www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org. Supporters in the USA wishing to make tax-deductible contributions can do so through the U.S. Friends of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a US based 501(c)(3).

The BPA Gallery showcases regional artists in monthly rotating exhibits in the C. Keith Birkenfeld Lobby and regularly participates in the First Friday Art Walk from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Gallery hours are 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Tuesday – Friday plus one hour prior to each performance.

BPA is supported, in part, by Bainbridge Community Foundation and One Call for All.
