Sumi Ink on Paper by Ayan Rivera
First Friday Art Walk: Friday, March 4 @ 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.; Exhibit runs throughout March

Both the landscape and the community inspired a new body of work for Ayan Rivera after his recent move to Bainbridge Island. This work includes the classical subjects of bamboo, orchid, chrysanthemum and plum blossom as well as interpretive departures from tradition. An ink stick primarily made of soot is rubbed on a stone with water which produces sumi ink. The intention is not so much to depict subjects as they appear but to convey what makes them alive. Sumi painting is both a creative and a mindfulness practice. Ayan paints “for the brief moments when the eye, hand, and brush move together without the mind and when letting go allows something else to move through.”
