Trylon Musique in association with Bainbridge Performing Arts presents HAIL AND REIGN, the world premiere musical by East Coast writer Colin Speer Crowley and Bainbridge Island composer Paul Lewis.
Hail and Reign is based on the true story of a protracted battle for the English throne which took place in the early to mid 1100s. It hinges on the struggle between the imperious and widely-despised, but legitimate, heir to the throne, Matilda, and the well-meaning nobleman Stephen, who usurps the crown and then, along with the rest of England, pays the consequences.
It’s a tale of colorful characters, outlandish behavior, intentions both good and evil, and courage gathered in the most unexpected places. Above all, it’s a story of the glass heart that beats within the steeliest chest: of the things we will endeavor and the things we will endure for love.
Hail and Reign is the product of a nearly two-year-long collaboration between two people who have never met. Paul was attracted to the project because he found Colin’s script to be “literate, funny, brazenly romantic, and ultimately moving.” Colin finds Paul’s score to be “bell-jar perfect, romantic and powerful, with every note mining the human soul and expressing its intimate secrets.” The creators of this musical will finally meet during the final week of rehearsals and will participate in a Chat Back following the performances.
Paul Lewis’ previously staged work includes The Recollection of Flight, a musical; The World Below, a children’s opera (with Mark Power); and the choral and orchestral piece Last Poem on Earth: A JazzRequiem (with Bonnie J. Wallace). Colin Speer Crowley, an East Coast playwright-lyricist, has written plays, screenplays, and short stories. Hail and Reign is his first staged work.
