Featuring Guest Soprano Corinna Lapid-Munter; plus Patricia Beasley (clarinet); Nancy Bondurant (bassoon); Sam Broadsky (piano); Barbara Deppe (‘cello); Amy Duerr-Day (oboe); Sarah Felstiner (flute); Jonathan Graber (violin); Lisa Hirayama (flute); Priscilla Jones (‘cello); Lara Moore (viola); James Quitslund (piano); Patricia Strange (violin); and Kestrel Wright (horn).
All the compositions in the April program are relatively recent. The listener will be surprised to hear modern music that is so accessible, far from the conquests and challenges of the musical avant-garde. These composers use 20th century musical language, techniques and harmonic ingredients, but clearly, giving pleasure to listeners was a concern. The character of the works is melodic, playful, light and charming.
June 3, 2012 ~ “Impressions & Portraits”
Impressionistic and Programmatic Music, including works by Debussy, Ravel and Berlioz
Impressionism in music aims to create descriptive impressions, not necessarily to draw clear pictures. The music is not designed to explicitly describe anything, but rather to create a mood or atmosphere. This is done through almost every aspect of music: melody, harmony, color, rhythm, and form. Surface ornamentation often obscures or substitutes for melody, and there is an avoidance of traditional musical form. Impressionism can be seen as a reaction against the rhetoric of Romanticism, disrupting the forward motion of standard harmonic progressions. Programmatic Music, in contrast, has a story attached to it and seeks to describe the story in detail through the music. |
