Sunday, December 9 @ 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Free @ Bainbridge Performing Arts
We that are
true lovers run into strange capers; but as all is
mortal in nature, so is all nature in love mortal in folly.
So said Touchstone in Act 2, Scene 4 of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, As You Like It. Translation: We do stupid things when we’re in love.
Join Bainbridge Performing Arts’ guest dramaturg, Megan Smithling, along with Sara French and Ann Bodden from the professional dating service, It’s Just Lunch! Seattle/Bellevue, for a conversation on the mysteries and challenges of love in both Shakespeare’s time and today. The free program takes place in BPA’s C. Keith Birkenfeld Lobby on Sunday, December 9, from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m., immediately before the 3 p.m. matinee of As You Like It.
The Merry Mysteries of Love is the second in BPA’s “Beyond the Script” lecture series, which is funded in part by a grant from Humanities Washington. The discussion will be moderated by Kathleen Thorne, “Beyond the Script” coordinator.
We’ll learn about the “dating do’s and don’t” in Shakespeare’s time and discuss how what attracts two people into a romantic and/or lifetime relationship has changed (or not) since then. How far have we strayed from the Darwinian underpinnings of our mating choices (Did you know, for example, that there’s an evolutionary reason why men want to mate with someone who looks like Barbie? Or that, Western civilization aside, humans are naturally polygamous)? What do modern singles look for in a soul mate, now that women are less likely to be economically dependent on a spouse? At what point does the wild, dizzying infatuation of romance give way to the steadier pair-bonding of what's called companionate love? And why is the dating scene in the Seattle area so dismal?
Megan Smithling holds a M.F.A. in Dramaturgy from University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Locally, she has served as a dramaturg for Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle Shakespeare Company, Book-It Repertory Theatre, and Taproot Theatre, and has a special interest in Shakespeare’s plays. Sara French is the Senior Director of It’s Just Lunch! Seattle/Bellevue, while Ann Bodden is Senior Client Coordinator. It’s Just Lunch is a nationwide dating and matchmaking service for busy single professionals.
To begin with, we know that all animals mate: The most primitive system in the brain, one that even reptiles have, tells us to reproduce. But while turtles, after the deed, lay their eggs in the sand and head back to sea, never seeing their mates again, human brains are considerably more complicated. We’ve developed some neural systems that seek romance, others that want comfort and companionship, and still others that are only out for a roll in the hay.
Science is just beginning to parse the inner workings of the brain in love, examining the blissful or ruinous experience from a medley of perspectives: neural systems, chemical messengers, and the biology of reward.
What scientists have discovered so far is that our brains play a trick, necessary for our species’ survival, by associating something that just happened, like meeting an attractive man or woman, with pleasure, and attributing that feeling to the specimen in front of us. So even though your fontal lobes may be telling you: he's never made a commitment, he drinks too much, he can't hold down a job! -- your middle brain is saying: he’s hot! And so the dance of attraction, infatuation and, possibly, love begins.
Studies also suggest that the brain in the first throes of love is much like a brain on drugs. Scans have shown that the part of the brain that’s active when a lovesick subject is shown a picture of his or her beloved is the same part that goes into action when a smoker reaches for a cigarette or when a gambler thinks he’s about to hit the jackpot.
In Shakespeare’s day, however, most marriages were still arranged on political, social, and economic grounds rather than on mutual attraction. Marriage among the property-owning classes in 16th century England was a collective decision of family and kin, not an individual one. It wasn’t until the 18th and 19th centuries that these attitudes began to give way to our modern, Western concept of marriage based on love and individual choice. Today, although a lot still depends on the influence of Mom and Dad's marriage, the gossip and urgings of friends, life experiences, shared interests, and timing, interpersonal chemistry plays a major role in kick-starting a relationship.
Still, love in the time of Shakespeare was no less than today a force to be reckoned with, as evidenced by such popular plays as Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, Antony and Cleopatra, and Much Ado about Nothing.
How does the passage of time or age affect the mysteries of love? We all know that the free fall of love's first rush can happen at any age, whether people are twenty or seventy. In fact, scholars think that Shakespeare himself was middle-aged when he penned his series of “Dark Lady” sonnets. However, the older people get, the more memories they harbor of joy and trust, rejection and disappointment. And as they learn from these experiences, the front brain, with its logic and reason, probably gets a greater say.
Somehow, it all comes together, for better or for worse: the combination of what's found in the mating dance of the ancient reptilian brain, the passion of the frontal brain, and the logic of the middle brain.
Meanwhile, if you’re still stuck in the local singles scene, your best bet for landing Ms. or Mr. Right may be to arrange a date in which you can escape together from a burning building. Find out why at “Beyond the Script: The Merry Mysteries of Love” on December 9 at BPA.
As You Like It appears at BPA December 7 – 9 and 13 – 16, with shows Thursdays – Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. plus Sundays at 3:00 p.m. A special Pay-What-You-Can preview performance is December 6. Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA) presents Shakespeare’s As You Like It
December 7-9, 13-16 + a Pay-What-You-Can-Preview December 6
Thursdays - Saturdays @ 7:30 p.m. + Sundays @ 3:00 p.m.
Long gray days. Cloud cover. Endless, ceaseless rain. Winter in the Northwest. What better diversion than the magical forest of Arden? Bainbridge Performing Arts welcomes the lush imagination of As You Like It, as created by William Shakespeare, directed by Ellen Graham, and realized by Steven Fogell’s brilliant set and costume design. A comic hymn to love and marriage, this most accessible of Shakespeare’s plays follows the stories of Orlando and Rosalind, Silvius and Phebe, the clown Touchstone and Audrey, in a world where nothing is as it seems. Women dressed as men, raucous wrestling matches, singing and dancing and the famous “All the world’s a stage” speech guarantee something for everyone.
Tracing the familiar themes of Shakespeare’s opposites (court vs. forest, tame vs. wild, age vs. youth), As You Like It’s characters realize life’s difficulties while remaining open to life’s optimism, and they always value a chance to play. Relax from holiday shopping, and come enjoy a different kind of holiday show. And remember: what happens in the forest of Arden, stays in the forest of Arden.
As You Like It brings the talents of Luke Walker, Sophia Federighi, Steven Fogell, Frank Buxton, John Ellis, and John Eisenhauer together on stage. For the full cast list visit www.BainbridgePerformingArts.org.
An Opening Night Reception kicks off As You Like It’s opening night on December 7 and will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the C. Keith Birkenfeld Lobby. The public is invited to meet the production’s director and share in the festivities.

Exploring the Dark Side of Jekyll & Hyde
Sunday, October 21 @ 1:30 – 2:30 p.m., prior to the 3:00 p.m. Matinee
The story of Jekyll & Hyde continues to intrigue us, not directly because of its violence, but because of the human evil that propagates Hyde’s violent acts - and the uneasy suspicion that we ourselves could be capable of that same evil.
BPA’s first Mainstage Beyond the Script segment explores our ongoing fascination with the dark side of human nature in a conversation moderated by Jekyll & Hyde director Steven Fogell. Jacqueline Helfgott, PhD, will be on hand to explain how the criminal mind was viewed in the past and to discuss criminal psychology as we understand it today. Chair of the Criminal Justice Department at Seattle University, her research interests include criminal behavior and psychopathy.
Our discussion will focus on the relationship of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Victorian milieu in comparison with our own contemporary understanding of the psychological underpinnings of the criminal mind. Why did it fascinate Stevenson’s audience, and why does it still hold such a fascination for us, in our “modern” era.
Beyond the Script: Exploring the Dark Side of Jekyll & Hyde precedes the 3:00 p.m. performance of Jekyll & Hyde on Sunday, October 21, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Adjuncts to BPA’s 0708 Mainstage series, Beyond the Script is funded in part with a grant from Humanities Washington. Dates and topics for As You Like It, Anton in Show Business, and The Secret Garden are TBA.
Jekyll & Hyde – a heart-pounding, award winning, musical tale of the epic battle between good and evil runs October 12-14, 19-21, and 26-28 at BPA. Performances are Fridays - Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m., plus a Pay-What-You-Can-Preview on Thursday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. An Opening Night Reception kicks off Jekyll & Hyde’s opening night on October 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the C. Keith Birkenfeld Lobby. The public is invited to meet the production’s directors and share in the festivities. Originally hailing from the sultry swamps of New Orleans, The Atomic Bombshells have taken the Seattle burlesque scene by storm. As original members of the illustrious Shim Sham Revue, these ladies were taught their bumps n’ grinds from the original stars of burlesque’s Golden Age, and were featured in numerous publications, such as GQ, Bust, and Tease magazine, and MTV.com. Now the girls bring a little Southern sizzle to the Pacific Northwest with their inspired combination of vintage Bourbon St. striptease, show-stopping choreography, and 1950's kitsch. The Atomic Bombshells have recently been seen opening for Dita Von Teese, performing to packed audiences at their weekly show in Seattle’s Mirabeau Room, and headlining the Camel Speakeasy Tour all around the U.S.A.

Thursday – Saturday, November 15 - 17 @ Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA)
What are the possibilities of everything going bad at once in a theatrical production? Actors not learning their lines, props misplaced and misused, the playwright adding dialogue up to the last day before opening. Play On, a comedy by Rick Abbot is about such things where dedicated amateur actors are confronted with a series of catastrophic events leading up to and during a performance of an original work. With characters like those we meet every day, this play is true to the magic and terror of live performance. It is hilarious in its reality and pathos. A must see.
Play On appears Thursday to Saturday, November 15 – 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA), 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island. Tickets, $12 for adults, and $8 for students and seniors may be reserved by calling West Sound Academy at 360.598.5954.

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra ~ Viennese Classics
35th Anniversary Season Opening Concert
With Music Director David Upham, and Guest Conductor Pat Strange
Saturday, November 10 @ 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 11 @ 3:00 p.m.
Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra’s landmark 35th Anniversary Season opens with a concert showcasing Viennese classics in November. For this occasion, Music Director David Upham has chosen works that both celebrate the history and nature of Bainbridge Island and honor the tradition of classical music which the orchestra performs.
The concert opens with Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, often called the "Unfinished" Symphony. The reasons why it was never completed remain mysterious even today, although the work’s status as a masterpiece is clear. With only two movements finished by the composer, it has won its place in the hearts and minds of music lovers everywhere.
Guest Conductor Pat Strange leads the symphony’s string section in Mozart’s Divertimento in D major, K.136. Divertimenti were works designed for an evening’s entertainment – clear and light in style and, as with Schubert, abundant in melodies.
Following is a work for winds by Richard Strauss, who led the Vienna Court Opera from 1919 to 1924. His early Suite in Bb Major follows in the tradition of Mozart’s serenades and divertimenti.
To close, the orchestra presents two favorites from the famous Strauss family: Johann Strauss, Jr. wrote the waltz Tales from the Vienna Woods as his stylized characterization of peasant dances. Waltzing will be followed by festive hand-clapping and foot-stomping as the orchestra concludes with the elder Johann Strauss’ famous Radetzky March.
Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra appears at BPA Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Each performance includes a pre-concert chat 45 minutes ahead of the performance, at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday and at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets: $15 for adults, and $10 for seniors, military, and youth, are available at BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island, or by phone at 206.842.8569. BPA Box Office hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and one hour prior to each performance. The production has one 15 minute intermission and is suitable for music lovers of all ages.
Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra’s 35th Anniversary Season continues with performances on March 8 & 9, and May 31 & June 1, plus a special collaborative performance with the Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra on April 20. Founded in 1972 by the late David Pence, the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra unites artists spanning generations and skill levels, and coming from all walks of life, to share their love of music and learn from each other.

Urvasi Dance Company: Odissi Classical Dance Theatre of India
Artistic Director: Dr. Ratna Roy | Managing Director: David J. Capers
Public Performance: Friday, November 2 @ 7:30 p.m.; Student Outreach Performances: Thursday, November 1 @ 11:00 a.m. & 1:30 p.m. and Friday, November 2 @ 10:30 a.m. & 12:30 p.m.
Dr. Ratna Roy and her company return to Bainbridge Performing Arts this fall with an entirely new program celebrating the rhythms, characters, and stories of ancient India. On November 1 and 2, Urvasi Dance Company performs both solo and group dances in the pure dance form, the Pallavi, which reveals the lyrical beauty in distinctive torso movements of Odissi, combined with virtuoso rhythmic foot patterns. One pallavi celebrates the animal kingdom in all its variety of movements and energies. Dramatic dances centered on the fiery goddess Durga, the life of divine Krishna, and colorful characters including the monkey god Hanuman from the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana, will delight audiences of all ages.
Established in 1975, Urvasi Dance Company has practiced and promoted the research and practice of classical Odissi/Orissi dance from India in Seattle and Olympia. More than 2000 years old, the Odissi classical dance style of India was revived through inspired efforts in India in the 1950’s. Odissi takes inspiration from both temple sculpture and the well-loved epics of India, the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The Urvasi Dance Company has brought the magic of India heroes, goddesses, animals, and demons alive for audiences throughout our region and internationally, for more than 30 years. The company made national news in India in its 2006-2007 Season: featured at the National Kharavela Festival, 3rd International Odissi Festival, Guru Pankaj Charan Das Festival, and the Mahari Festival, the troupe showcased both its famous “Gativilas Pallavi” as a group item and its five soloists, including the Pancha Kanya by the artistic director, Dr. Ratna Roy.
Classical Odissi dance, as performed by the Urvasi Dance Company, is performed in both the well-known Gotipua tradition of Guru Kelu Charan Mohapatra and in the little-known Mahari tradition of Guru Pankaj Charan Das. The Orissi (literary transliteration) or Odissi (the popular transliteration) dance style is characterized by the unique sculpturesque quality, the separation of the upper torso from the lower half of the body, the constant juxtaposition of rhythmic strength with lyrical torso movements, and the powerful portrayal of female characters from the myths and epics of India. Reconstructed from historical remains by master dancers in the 1950’s, Odissi took India by storm in the 1970’s and Europe in the 1980’s. Ratna Roy was trained under the guru, one of the principal masters responsible for the reconstruction of Odissi and has performed internationally in Europe, Asia, and North America (US, Canada, and Mexico). She is completing her book on the reconstruction of Odissi and teaches Expressive Arts (dance) and literature at The Evergreen State College in Olympia.
Ratna Roy and her work with the Urvasi Dance Company have been met with critical acclaim: “[Ratna] Roy’s scholarly research, as well as her understanding of the physical components of Odissi, make her an important factor in the preservation of Odissi’s heritage. The Mahari style is no longer known in most of India. Only two of the original female dancers are living. . . Her [Ratna’s] continued preservation and performance work with the Urvasi Dance Company plays a critical role in keeping the dance alive in India, and it has begun to make Odissi culturally relevant in the United States.” (Monograph, Americans for the Arts, October 2005).
Collaborative educational opportunities supplement the public and Student Outreach performances: As an integral part of their India Studies curriculum, over six hundred World History students will participate in all-day music and dance workshops with Urvasi Dance Company at Woodward Middle School, and Sakai Intermediate School on Thursday and Friday, October 25 and 26. Parents and families of these students are heartily encouraged to attend the Friday, November 2, evening public performance. In addition, a Professional Development participatory workshop for classroom teachers will be offered in “Decoding the Language of Dance-theatre in India” on October 23. All education programs are generously funded through grants from the Washington State Arts Commission and the Harvest Foundation, as part of Bainbridge Island Arts Education Community Consortium’s Teen Empowerment through the Arts Programming.
Urvasi Dance Company appears at BPA November 1 and 2, with a special public performance Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, $15 for adults, and $10 for seniors, military, and youth, are available at BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island, or by phone at 206.842.8569. BPA Box Office hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and one hour prior to each performance. The production has one 15 minute intermission and is suitable for all ages.
In addition to the public performance Friday evening, BPA offers Student Outreach performances on Thursday, November 1 at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and Friday, November 2 at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Outreach tickets are $6 per person, and patrons are encouraged to plan ahead, as a limited number of tickets are available to the community for the Student Outreach performances, which are sold primarily to school groups.

Launches Bainbridge Performing Arts’ Mainstage Theatre Season
October 12-14, 19-21, 26-28: Fridays & Saturdays @ 7:30 p.m. + Sundays @ 3 p.m.
BPA’s 2007-2008 Mainstage theatre season opens with the heart-pounding, award winning, musical tale of the epic battle between good and evil. Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart, Jekyll & Hyde opened on Broadway in 1997, becoming an instant success.
Director Steven Fogell, having worked on the show pre-Broadway at the 5th Ave. in Seattle, has never been so engrossed by a theatrical show. He describes it as “an emotional roller coaster of strength and passion,” saying, “it’s like a steam train plowing across the stage.” The character complexities, musical sophistication, evocative lyrics, and simplicity of the set give Jekyll & Hyde a powerful allure for audience members. The number of patrons inspired to return again and again prompted the press to coin the term for these die hard audiences as… “Jekkies”.
Jekyll & Hyde blends the old style of an opera or melodrama with the high tech spectacle of today’s Broadway hits. Fogell declares, “Get ready for an entirely unique and entrancing theatrical experience – Jekyll & Hyde is sheer genius!”
Jekyll & Hyde appears at BPA, with shows Fridays - Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m., plus a Pay-What-You-Can-Preview on Thursday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. An Opening Night Reception kicks off Jekyll & Hyde’s opening night on October 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the C. Keith Birkenfeld Lobby. The public is invited to meet the production’s directors and share in the festivities. Tickets, $20 for adults, and $15 for seniors, military, and youth, are available at BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island, by phone at 206.842.8569. BPA Box Office hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and one hour prior to each performance. The production has one 15 minute intermission and is suitable for mature (PG-13) audiences.

Sunday, October 7 @ 7:00 p.m.
Legendary folksinger and recipient of a 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance, Tom Paxton has become a voice of his generation, addressing issues of injustice and inhumanity, laying bare the absurdities of modern culture and celebrating the tenderest bonds of family, friends, and community.
Paxton’s place in folk music is secured not just by hit records and awards, but by the admiration of three generations of fellow musicians. Holly Near reports, “Every folk singer I know has either sung a Tom Paxton song, is singing a Tom Paxton song or will soon sing a Tom Paxton song. Now either all the folk singers are wrong, or Tom Paxton is one hell of a songwriter.” According to Judy Collins, “His melodies haunt, his lyrics reverberate. I have sung Tom’s songs for three decades and will go on doing so in the new century, for they are beautiful and timeless, and meant for every age.” And Ani DiFranco affirms, “Tom Paxton embodies the spirit of folk music in the most beautiful sense…He’s the coolest.”
An internationally recognized and loved cultural figure, Tom Paxton has always chosen goodwill over commercial success. This is the man who wrote and lives the words, “Peace will come, and let it begin with me.” Tom Paxton appears at BPA Sunday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets, $23 (advance)/$25 (at the door), and $10 for youth, are available at BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island, by phone at 206.842.8569. BPA Box Office hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and one hour prior to each performance. September 1 @ BPA
“Yoga for your funny bone! Calisthenics for your brain! Cross training for the psyche! Stream of consciousness hilarity for the whole family!” Nothing The EDGE does is scripted – the troupe members are literally making it up as they go along. For more than thirteen years, the troupe’s zany “PG-13” styled humor has inspired laughter, cheering and rave reviews.
The EDGE Improv appears at BPA, Saturday, September 1 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, $15 for adults, and $10 for seniors, military, and youth, are available at BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island, or they may be charged by phone at 206.842.8569. BPA Box Office hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and one hour prior to each performance. The production has one 15 minute intermission and is suitable for “PG-13” audiences. Bainbridge Performing Arts extends special thanks to our sponsors: BPA’s 2007 - 2008 Season Media Sponsor is Bainbridge Island Review, and The EDGE Presenting Sponsor is The Harbour Public House.
